EARLY DETECTION IS FOR WOMEN OF ALL AGES
Hudson Valley Surgical Group Breast Specialists believe early detection helps thousands each year. Following the American Cancer Society's guidelines for the early detection of breast cancer improves the chances that breast cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage and treated successfully.
WOMEN IN THEIR 20'S
Breast self-exam (BSE) is an option for women starting in their 20s. Women should report any breast changes to their health professional right away. Women should have their BSE technique reviewed during their physical exam by a health professional.
WOMEN IN THEIR 20'S AND 30'S
Clinical breast exam (CBE) should be also included as part of a regular health exam by a health professional preferably every 3 years. A CBE is done along with mammograms and offers a chance for women and their doctor to discuss any changes in their breasts.
WOMEN AGE 40 AND OLDER
At this age women should have a CBE by a health professional and a mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. Current evidence is even stronger than in the past that regular mammograms help find cancer early.
WOMEN AT HIGH RISK (GREATER THAN 20% LIFETIME RISK)
These women should get a MRI and a mammogram every year. Women at moderately increased risk should talk with their doctors about the benefits and limitations of adding MRI screening to their yearly mammogram.
