Splenectomy
Your spleen is an organ that filters blood and destroys old red blood cells and platelets. The spleen helps create new red blood cells and fight infection. Infections, cancer, and disease can cause the spleen to enlarge. In some cases, enlarged or ruptured spleens need to be removed. The spleen may be removed by traditional or laparoscopic surgery methods, depending on your condition. Laparoscopic surgery is less invasive and associated with a quicker and smoother recovery.
