Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

Stereotactic breast biopsy is used to obtain a sample of suspicious breast tissue for examination for cancer cells. It is especially useful for diagnosing areas of breast tissue that appear suspicious on a mammogram, but are not palpable with a clinical breast examination. The procedure involves using a special mammography machine to pinpoint the suspicious area. After administering local anesthesia, the surgeon uses a vacuum assisted needle to remove the tissue samples. Recovery time is brief and you may resume your regular activities quickly.
Stereotactic breast biopsy may be an alternative to and is much less invasive than open surgical biopsy methods. It is a short outpatient procedure. It does not require stitches and does not leave a scar. Most women describe the procedure as painless. The stereotactic breast biopsy method does not distort the breast tissue or make it difficult to read future mammograms. Further, stereotactic biopsy methods are as accurate as when tissue samples are surgically removed.
